Ancillary Task 1: Magazine Review

The course requirements for ancillary task 1 is to create a magazine review page including all of the conventions that are typically found in a magazine review page.

Conventions in a magazine review page

1) Large use of Images:- Usually found across the entire page of the magazine, they are in high detail showing every single fibre of hair.

2) Large Title:- The title is usually in big bold writing which can be easily read and identifiable this is usually located somewhere on the page where it can stand out as soon as you see the page.

3) Small images:- These are placed usually in the corners of the magazine these can be angled or adjusted to suit the page and can be seen clearly.

4) Use of Columns:- Columns are used to divide up the text so it can be read more easily.

5) Small, but clear text:- The text is within columns in small font, but it can still be read easily. The columns can be located beneath or to the side of the picture. The writing is usually joined up to either side of the column to make it appear neater.

6) Quotes:- These are normally significant memorable lines from the film, this is to give it more of a unique touch. Theses are located within the text, but a lot bigger in size at least font size 20 maybe even size 24. Also there is small clear boarder around the outside so it stands out more from the text, or in a different colour to the original text.

7) Shapes:- These are usually overlapping the image with short but concise words that are important to the film being reviewed.

8) Rating:- Rates are common in film reviews and are located at the bottom or near the title of the film review page, this is normally important part of the page.

9) Comments:- The comments are located in either different shapes, if they are from the actors/directors/famous celebrities who have watched the film.

10) The Cast and Crew:- Normally located together in different colours to the rest of the original text at the bottom of the page.

11) Summary of the film:- Normally located at the bottom right of the page in a bigger style of text, font size 16, so it stands out from the rest of the text, usually has underlining and italics.

12) Background:- Normally black or white, so the main text can be black or white depending on the choice of background colour.

Feedback of Film Review Page.

From the feedback that I received, I changed the positioning of the text which is located at the bottom right of the page. It starts from the word 'Released' and ends with 'a brilliant film'. Also making the boxes with the word 'IN CINEMA' closer together as there was a small gap where a white line could be seen.

Final Film Review Page

This is the final version of my film review page.

Magazine Draft Cover

This is my draft version of a magazine cover. As you can see there are words and sentences scattered across the page making it look untidy and messy this will be the first item that I will definitely change to make my film magazine front cover look more attractive and less 'in your face'.

Feedback of Magazine Cover.

The only Feedback was to lower the picture from 'Cowboy VS Aliens' so that the 2 faces in the picture are near centre of the cover. Also to remove 1-3 pieces of information found at the sides of the cover and re-arrange them so the reader can read them clearly.

As you can now see I have spaced out the sentences and removed a few words and it now looks more presentable.

Skills Gained and Developed.

The skills that I have gained were mainly the ability to use and explore QuarkXPress, for instance I can now draw different shapes and equip them to my poster or review page in an accurate and easily noticeable position. I can position a main picture, that the article or magazine is most interested in, and make it more presentable for the eyes of the reader. I know how to import pictures onto the page and put them at different angles to create the ideal position. I can also change the text style and rotate them and position them in 3 distinct columns. I have developed each one of the skills that I have gained.  However these are not the only skills I have learned as I am currently still leaning more skills to help develop my understanding of QuarkXPress.

Magazine Film Review Page for Binary Productions film 'A Passion Of A Bleeding Rose' Task.

I have used the skills that I have gained during my experience with QuarkXPress to create my own Magazine Film Review page on the film that Binary Productions has created 'A Passion Of A Bleeding Rose'.

Planning and Research.

In the making of my Magazine Film Review task I will be using Existing examples from professional Film Reviewers as a template to create my own version of a film review page. The magazine that I have used for my inspiration is SFX Magazine.

This is what a professional film reviewer page should look like.

SFX writer.
The review that I will be using is from the film 'The Crazies'

This is a close up image of the film 'The Crazies'

First impression of the photo is the size, it takes up a large area of the reviewer page. This tells me that the picture is very important for the reviewer to reference and also to the reader who would want to know what the film looks like.
This pictures shows two people hugging which tell me that the people hugging will be in a relationship towards the end of the film and the person on the left is an outcast because he is looking away from the explosion and away from the hugging couple.

Draft Magazine Film Review Page

This is my draft version of the Film review page, as you can see I have included quotes and pictures and thought about the layout of the whole design and where I would place each individual text or picture, I have even created a bleeding rose overlapping another picture which will be of Chris and his Mum, Rose. The squiggles are text boxes.

Planning stage of Magazine Review

These pictures are of the planning stages of my Magazine review page. In this picture i have stated to add photos and text mainly who stared and directed the film short. I have placed a boarder around the outside and 2 screen shots from our film and added a rating at the bottom right of the page.

This is the magazine review nearly complete. As you can see I have added one more picture that needs to be resized, a starting point for my actual review of the film located in the centre and the run arounds on the writing in red is fixed and working well. I have also added red and black lines to divide up the different sections of the director, cast and how long the film lasts.

This is a nearly finished version of my Magazine Review Page, I have included different conventions from the set list at the beginning of this page and combined other interesting conventions from the SFX Magazines as well.
