Rough cut of 'Passion of a Bleeding Rose' Audience feedback

This post is important so that anyone reading this can understand and remain up to date with our film. Binary Productions have finished and posted the rough cut of our film and we have been given feedback by a small target audience group

Audience = A
Binary Productions = BP

This is a summary of what that small target audience said:-

• A; During the beginning of the film, the music is loud and sudden. 
• BP; This is easily fixable and all that I need to do is adjust the sound so it fades in slowly so it doesn't startle our audience. 
• A; The titles at the beginning of the film are brilliant, but there is something about them that feels wrong, not sure what.
• BP; I believe that it is the layout of the titles because they fade in fine, but as they fade out the title snap shut and doesn't keep with the theme of titles which is romantic.
• A; The titles are very quick and we don't have enough time to read them.
• BP; I will slow down the speed it takes for the titles to appear and exit on the film, even though it would increase our film time, but I shall consider it. 
• A; There is something wrong with the mirror scene, the camera seems to jump and move about the place, making difficult to focus on the scene.
• BP; Yes, I agree and the camera does perform a jump shots because we did knock the camera a little, but it won't take long to re-film that scene.
• A; The kitchen scene is dark and the camera is all over the place.
• BP; Yes, it was difficult filming that scene because I couldn't get the right angle and position of the props, so we were more focused on this aspect.
• A; I was wondering why Chris was walking on gravel, when he is walking on the road
• BP; Well, we needed a sound of Chris walking and gravel was the only sound we could use, But if we re-film that scene chris would have to walk a little louder or record him walking.
• A; The light seems to shade the scene with the mum picking the flower and it distracts from this important scene.
• BP; Yes, we thought that this scene of the mum picking the rose was good, but we can change the lighting and angle the shot differently maybe the same shot but with more light.
• A; The mum collapsing on her own and Chris finding her latter didn't seem right for the moment.
• BP; What we plan to do is re-film this garden scene in the day and as chris approaches his mum dying he can lean over grab the rose and chuck it down on his mum's body.
• A; The freeze at the end is brilliant, but its too dark.
• BP; We plan to re-film this section in daylight when it is not so dark.

All of this feedback is vital for Binary Productions to develop and improve our film short.

First cut of Binary Productions Film POABR

This is our first cut of our film. As you would expect there are a few things that we need to re-shoot and try different angles on, but the majority of the film for a first cut is pretty good.
A first cut is essential for any film maker, this means that the director can see what worked and what didn't work in the film, so the director can re-shoot some parts of the film edit it more professionally and add or take away sound.

This is an important part in film making because without a first cut you would not know what went wrong and you will think it was good enough.

Titles and Ident

This post is to show the titles and Ident that our group has created.


The titles and Ident will eventually be joined together with our main film short.






Explain the process and what the title styles fonts and images mean about the film and the music as well.

The Ident starts with a 13 second animation of who produced the film short. The first thing that I noticed was the sound of a person typing on a keyboard and numbers starting to appear, this doesn't give much information until the letters start to appear and the first word is 'Binary' and the numbers make sense. The reason why we went with this particular style of font and animation was because the groups name is 'Binary Productions' and the group needed an animation which was basic in design but made sense to an audience as to why we have used this design.

From 14 seconds to 46 seconds is the main Ident which introduces you to the film. From 14 seconds to 37 seconds, the animation is a simple but effective design, for example as the titles start to form in the background rose petals start to fall which symbolises delicateness and pain, which is a main theme of our film, the titles are the same as the background, for instance as the titles appear they all slowly join up in a handwriting style also it seems very delicate but strong because as the titles appear there are no fades or delays in the design and they draw attention to themselves instantly.

From 37 seconds to 47 seconds the background animation changes to show the rose that the petals have fallen from as the animation pans around. The audience can see the main title of the film 'Passion Of A Bleeding Rose' in the centre of the screen and the audience would think that this film is a romantic drama genre but as the film progresses the genre is not what the audience first thought. The sound slowly fades in at the start and slowly builds until the end when it cuts off, in my opinion the sound in the animation hints to the audience a sense of happiness and tranquillity which leads them into a false sense of security.

Filming Days for First Cut

Below I am making a shooting diary which consists of all of our filming dates, from now, until we finish filming.

In ths diary I will be posting all the positive and negative points and progress that was made, this will assist us and help us to learn from them by making our next film shoot better.


Thursday 19th January 2012: TOM FISHER, JOSH CLARKE AND DEMI LEIGH ALCOCK PRESENT; SAM BECKETT ABSENT VALID REASON.
AFTER SCHOOL 3:35pm

Firstly when we arrived at the shooting location we got straight into setting up the equipment. We brought with us the crane, tripod and HD camera, it took us 15 minutes to set up the crane after realising we set up the crane arm the wrong way, so we couldn't operate the tilt arm for high and low angle shots, which meant that we had to take it all apart, plus it was cold, so work on the crane slowed a lot. Once we sorted the crane we began filming, we had some great ideas for positioning from Josh, who was director, and very good crane and camera shots from myself, Tom. Demi was artistic director which means she had to tell the actor, Josh's mum who was playing the part of Rose, how to act in this scene and give her motivation, however Demi failed to give accurate direction But Josh's mum persevered and  was able to create the character we wanted. We hired Josh's mum as an actor because it was her life long dream to act in a film, so we gave her the opportunity to act and she was amazing!
We managed to film the garden scene, which was  a very quick scene, however it is probably one of the most important scenes because it is at the end of the film. Also it was an extremely cold day so we didn't want Josh's mum to get too cold as well as ourselves, so we did quick shooting but at the same time we took our time making sure every last piece was correct before concluding the shoot at 5:30pm.


Saturday 21st January 2012: JOSH CLARKE PRESENT EVERYONE ELSE NOT ABLE TO MAKE IT. EVERYONE HAD A VALID REASON, MINE WAS THE FACT THAT  I HAD TO HELP TEACH DRAMA TO CHILDREN AT THE PRINCE OF WALES THEATRE IN CANNOCK AT A WORKSHOP WITH A FRIEND.

All that I know is that Josh filmed from 10:30am until 1:00pm and  shot the living room scene, where Chris placed down Rose on the sofa, and the chair lift scene.


Wednesday 1st February 2012: TOM FISHER, JOSH CLARKE AND SAM BECKETT PRESENT; DEMI LIEGH ALCOCK WAS NOT IN LESSON.
DURING LESSON 1:25pm til 3:35pm
Myself and Sam went to collect Adam, who was playing the part of Chris, we fetched him from 6th form he was needed to film the office scene, which was not a long scene, in the meantime Josh set up the camera and tripod. We set to work straight away, Sam and Josh set up the set detailing how each little item would look, whilst I gave Adam his motivation for this scene, which he acted and responded really well to. There was a little bit of trouble getting the focus right in certain scenes, which we solved by shooting the same shot a number of times changing the angle and positioning of the shot in different places around the office.

We decided to place the camera right in from of Adam, Chris, to give a point of view shot from the laptops point of view, this was a good shot but the flatness of the camera was not good, so we raised it by placing books underneath the camera because the tripod could not fit on the window-sill. We used a nice point of view shot that was controlled by Josh and we used Adam, Chris's, hand in the shot to give the audience a feeling of how Chris reacts to life.


Tuesday 7th February 2012: TOM FISHER AND JOSH CLARKE PRESENT: SAM BECKETT AND DEMI LEIGH ALCOCK ABSENT VALID REASON.

Myself and Josh began filming about 4pm at the Ramada, this didn't take long because all we needed equipment wise, was the HD camera and the tripod, we filmed Chris walking then running into work as a long shot panning to the right. This took about 8 minutes of filming, once finished we dismantled the camera from the tripod and walked to Josh's house where we continued filming.

At 4:45pm we set the camera up in Mrs Clarke's bedroom to film Chris waking up Rose, I gave Adam, playing Chris, his motivation, tired and annoyed with his mum, in more detail of course, and we began filming this. One scene took 10 minutes to film which was good and quick and we got some excellent footage.

Me and Josh took Adam into Josh's bedroom for the wake up scene, we rearranged his bedroom and took an aerial shot of Chris asleep, then a point of view shot of Chris awake, but because he is tired Josh came up with a clever idea to blur the lens, by setting the focus in and out a few times, this was a good idea.

We Then filmed in the bathroom where we came across a problem with the camera, because we want the camera to film at the mirror at an angle so you can see Chris clearly.  I decided to take the tripod off  Josh and place it off centre to the right of the mirror at an angle with a slight over the shoulder shot. We filmed the shots we needed and looked back at the footage to see if you can see the camera and you could not, so I was very happy with this.
