How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
I have listed a set of examples of software and hardware that I have used when producing my film short 'Passion Of A Bleeding Rose'.
Soundtrack Pro
I have used soundtrack pro to create the music for my film 'Passion Of A Bleeding Rose' including the titles and credits, by using a keyboard and free samples of instruments given by soundtrack pro.
I used strings and brass instrument sounds to increase the tension and suspense of the film short. I also faded in the strings sharply to create tension and suspense which will make the audience feel that something is going to happen, for example as they did in the famous 'Jaws' theme. When the audience heard this theme they knew that the shark was approaching. I then toned down this tension by introducing a light ping sound to calm and relax the situation, by combining these instruments I was able to create the right feel for this film.
Compressor
I have used the compressor to compress video files from Final Cut Express on to YouTube.
I have used compressor to import files from Final Cut Express, after I exported them, I imported the file from Final Cut Express and placed it into this box with the arrow pointed down and placed the quick time, H.264 along with the file. I then imported it into the Compressor and pressed submit which started the compression process, this shortens the length of time it takes to download on to YouTube.
Final Cut Express
I have used Final Cut Express to edit my film short 'Passion Of A Bleeding Rose' In this screen shot you can see on the left box there is the footage captured, called sequence, which I can then transfer to the canvas box to view the footage and mark in where I want to begin and I can also mark out where I want it to end. Once this is complete I am able to drag it into the long edit bar at the bottom and begin to edit my film. Blue is marked as video and green is marked as audio. Using the tool bar located to the right of the screen shot I can cut and delete sections of film which are not relevant. Once I have edited the film, the completed video is shown in the final box on the right where I can view and make changes if I am not happy. The time of the footage is located in a small rectangle box on the left.
Adobe Photoshop CS4
This is Adobe Photoshop CS4, used to create film posters and edit other types of photographs and screen shots.
I have used Adobe Photoshop CS4 to create my film's film poster 'Passion Of A Bleeding Rose'. I started off with a blank A3 piece of paper. I added a black background with the picture of the table and all of the theme items of the film I positioned in the centre using the tool bar located towards the left of the screen shot. Once the image is in place I used a 'run around; to create a small gap between the table and the titles of the film, this is in black. Next I created the titles and credits by using a text box, I can place a text box any where on the screen and type in any style, size and font that I want, as you can see the small sentence at the top of the poster 'Binary Productions Presents', is in the same style as depicted in the film, and the same with the main title 'Passion Of A Bleeding Rose' in a contrasting red. I changed the colour by selecting the image located on the right task bar, here I can change the colour, the shape and the position of the text. Finally, the credits at the bottom of the poster are in the style of steel tong, which are used in nearly all film posters, I used different key commands that are present when using Photoshop, to place words such as 'Director' in a steel tong style.
QuickTime Player
QuickTime Player is mainly used to capture footage by using Screen recording, Voice recording and movie recording.
In QuickTime Player I mainly used Voice recording and Screen recording. When using screen cast recording it is important to write down what you intend to say and use omniDazzle, which is used as a highlighting tool, this is so that the viewer of your recording can see what you are talking about. I used QuickTime Player on my Evaluation questions which makes presenting information more efficient and understandable because I am speaking and showing the viewer what I am talking about on the screen.
Quake Express
I used Quake Express to create a magazine cover and review.
I have used Quake Express to design and create my final version of my magazine review, seen below. I used the text tool, picture tool moving tool to position and create my final Magazine review and draft cover. To Start off I used the shape tool to create a boarder around the piece of paper, then created text boxes of different sizes positioned towards the middle to bottom section of the page. In this text box I can create columns and change the style, font and size of text even the colour. I also created a picture box were I was able to import a picture and place inside this picture box where I can then change the size and layout of the picture.
Final Draft AV 2.5
I used Final Draft AV2.5 to write scripts for actors to read from but also for the director and crew to use to make sure the actors are saying their lines correctly. The reason why I have used Final Draft AV 2.5 is for its specific use with script writing, for instance I can type in specific letters, EST, and the Final Draft knows that I mean Establishing shot, and it writes the word Establishing Shot in for me. Word is not dedicated to, only script writing and Final Draft AV 2.5 is only used for script writing.
StoryBoard Quick 5.0
Using StoryBoard Quick 5.0 is very effective way a producing a quick still frame video of your film.
The way that I have used this was by constructing a quick still version of what my film should look like by the end of the course.
This is what StoryBoard Quick 5.0 looks like, I can make all most any background I want, in this case it is a small restaurant, with a small red car. The car can change shape by resizing it, change colour and rotation, this can be done with the man as well.
This is a lot better to use than most conventional ways to create a storyboard because if I were to create one on paper and make a mistake or change my mind, I would have to rub out the entire page or start again from scratch, this makes using StoryBoard Quick 5.0 a more effective and beneficial tool when creating a film.
This is what a finished PDF version should look like. From this I can create an animatic which is highly useful when watching back because each frame that I complete is a different position and angle for the camera, it also gives me an idea of how long the films should last.
Binary Productions Storyboard
Live Type
I used Live Type to create the Ident and the titles for my Film Short 'Passion Of A Bleeding Rose'.
In this I can create a title, for example 'Passion Of A Bleeding Rose', and I can change this by using different styles available , the size of the writing, the colour and the animation.
By changing the animation I can control where the titles enter and exit from and what style. I can make the titles go vertical on the screen and I am able to loop it. I can also add a background to make the titles more appropriate to the film. Once I have completed this section I can export it then import it into Final Cut Express and edit it into my film.
Web 2.0
This is take from Wikipedia;
"Web 2.0 is a loosely defined intersection of web application features that facilitate participatory information sharing, interoperability, user-centered design,[1] and collaboration on the World Wide Web. Examples of Web 2.0 include social networking sites, blogs, wikis, video sharing sites."
I will now explain what Web 2.0 I have used to help produce my film.
The ways that I have used Web 2.0 are vast because on completion of my film 'Passion Of A Bleeding Rose' I posted it on to YouTube, THE biggest video sharing site on the World Wide Web were a few people watched it. I managed to post it on Facebook as well where I managed to get a few reviews from past media students, they told Binary Productions what they thought about the first cut and the final cut version of the film.
Blogger
I have used Blogger to create a blog at the beginning of the A2 course, same with the AS course.
When using Blogger, I am able to present my information in a neat, organised and colourful format and also embed videos and audio recording of myself talking to any one who views my blog. This makes presenting information more reliable, appropriate and a safe approach for showing your work.
DivShare
I have used DivShare to host my videos and audio recordings so I can embed them into my blog at a more convenient date.
DivShare is an excellent way of storing all of your recordings, audio, screen or video. I have used DivShare for two years, AS and A2, and I can't think of a better way to store them and convert the footage for me to use on my blog.
Scribd
Scribd is used to host PDF's, I have used PDF's on my Magazine review, Poster and the treatment.
When I am posting the PDF's on to my bog from Scribd, I find it incredible easy to use because as you enter the Scribd website all that I need to do was enter my log in details then Scribd takes me to my dashboard where I can find the PDF's I was looking for and embed the PDF on to my blog.
Facebook is an example of Web 2.0 because it is a social networking site so I can create a page just for my media group Binary Productions where I can communicate with other group members and actors involved.
I have used Facebook because every member of my group has a Facebook account and it is much easier to organise a meeting for a shooting date, also the shooting date is saved in the time line setting of the Facebook page so there is no excuse for anyone not to respond or tun up for a shoot.
YouTube
Using YouTube is an excellent way of distributing a film on a mass scale because YouTube is another example of Web 2.0 for is video sharing capability.
This is a screen shot of YouTube when I watched my film short 'Passion Of A Bleeding Rose'.
I have used YouTube to upload my film short because it can be viewed quickly and it is an easy way to embed a movie on to my blog, this is by clicking the button marked share which is located underneath the film.
Camera
This is an example of the type of HD Camera that I have used during the filming shoot.
I used this particular camera and the require HD tapes because this camera allowed me to review the footage instantly in HD quality and it also provided me with a long lasting battery life and was easily portable when moving from location to location.
Safari
Using Safari is for accessing the Internet on.
Using Safari is essential for this course because without the use of Safari I could not access the blogger or all of the images needed, I would not be able to post video's on to YouTube and video and voice recordings on to DivShare.
I used Safari to find images and screen shots of existing media to use in my evaluations and main blog, for example I used 36 different screen shots from existing media and my own film to produce a key frame document.
